Analysis of RIA in comparison with the HTML application

The basic criteria for evaluating software

Applications based on RIA are very innovative; the majority of Internet users were not so far possible encounter with them. In order to provide a credible impact of the proposed solutions to increase productivity and application functionality study was carried out. Studies aimed at comparing HTML and RIA applications by evaluating them by major software customers - Internet users. The basic criteria for the evaluation software can include:

  • Software Functionality
  • The speed of service
  • Software Productivity
  • Absorbing of the software

 Description of the research

Tests were performed on a representative group of 10 Internet users aged 16-50 years, of both sexes and of varying degrees of education. In order to unify the results were taken 4 basic assumptions about the survey carried out.
  • Research will consist of 4 tests, 2 for each type of software.
  • All 4 tests will take place within 60 minutes of starting the first of them.
  • After each of the 4 tests everybody has to complete a survey
  • Answers to questions concerning the type of application, take place after the test.

Test results and comparison of HTML and RIA technologies

Comparative tests have been carried out, they were based on survey and the software InteliSHOPh and InteliSHOPf . People who took part in the survey came from the 20-50 age bracket and had a high school education or higher. There were two groups of equal number of men and women during the research.

Time was measured for both applications and for two separate tasks. The results are shown below:

Two graphs are presented below. They show direct comparison of time performance for both applications. The first chart shows a comparison of total working time performance which was calculated on the basis of all 10 results. The latter illustrates the average duration of the tasks.

According to those graphs, we can easily see difference between the times of performance of the same tasks in two different applications. If you are using RIA technologies and InteliSHOPf applications you are able to perform the task in time for only 70% of the time needed to perform the same task while using HTML applications. For such short tasks, which assume only 6 of the purchase, the difference in time was over 1 minute. Moreover, increasing the number of tasks to 8, and supplementing them with additional purchase of several pieces of the product, the time difference is increased.

The aim of the second task was to examine the possibility of user adaptation to the new environment.  This user has already had some experience with the first round of testing. It turned out that there was a lot of variation in the time results in the tasks and it was maintained at the same percentage level. This means that the task execution time is proportional to the time of use of applications, and hence is proportional to the number of their operations. The RIA application makes the execution time of the single operation faster. Most of the respondents said that it was time and speed of performed operations that had the greatest influence on their opinions about the new solution.

The most important elements which allow fast products and information access are:

  • Variety of producers and automatically update the list of products for selected category
  • The structure of one screen view which gives an access to products, shopping cart and search engines from one application
  • Dynamic use of the filter to Product List

According to the research results there is no need to reload the application window when the performance of any operation and it is believed to be the advantage of RIA. Moreover, a change in quantity of the products in your shopping cart is accepted automatically by the system. Furthermore, once the user filled the data in the registration form, it is memorized by the end of the session.

More and more Internet users trust RIA Applications. Results of the second test show that, unlike HTML applications, evaluation of the use of RIA was higher than the first assessment issued after the first test. In the case of an HTML application assessment remained at the same level or fell below the threshold of the first round test.

This shows that users do not know and are not accustomed to this type of software. Although they get used to them very quickly, and what's more, they prefer them to previous ones.

This allows us to conclude that there is a strong demand for innovative solutions such as the Macromedia Flex technology.
